Well Loretta she's my barroom girl Wears them sevens on her sleeves Dances like a diamond shines Tells me lies I love to believe Her age is always twenty two Her laughing eyes a hazel hue Spends my money like a water falls Loves me like i want her to Well Loretta won't you say to me Darlin put your guitar on Have a little shot of booze Play a blue and wailin' song My guitar rings a melody My guitar sings Loretta's fine Long and lazy blonde and free And I can have her anytime Sweetest at the break of day Prettiest in the setting sun She don't cry when I can't stay Least not 'til she's all alone Loretta I won't be gone long Keep your dancing slippers on keep me on your mind a while I'll be back babe to make you smile Well Loretta she's my barroom girl Wears them sevens on her sleeves Dances like a diamond shines Tells me lies I love to believe Her age is always twenty two Her laughing eyes a hazel hue Spends my money like a water falls Loves me like I want her to Loves me like I want her to Loves me like I want her to

We crossed the wild Pecos We forded the Nueces We swum the Guadalupe And we followed the Brazos Red River runs rusty The Wichita clear And down by the Brazos I courted my dear Singing li, li, li, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le, le, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le Lend me your hand The Trinity's muddy and the Brazos quicksand The fair Angelina Runs glossy and gliding The crooked Colorado Runs weaving and winding The slow San Antonio Courses the plains But I never will walk By the Brazos again Singing li, li, li, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le, le, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le Lend me your hand The Trinity's muddy and the Brazos quicksand Well the girls of Little River They're plump and they're pretty Sabine and the Sulphur Have many a beauties The banks of the Neches There's girls by the score But down by the Brazos I'll wander no more Singing li, li, li, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le, le, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le Lend me your hand The Trinity's muddy and the Brazos quicksand Singing li, li, li, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le, le, le Lend me your hand Li, li, li, le Lend me your hand There's plenty of rivers to water the land

about

Jess Williamson offers a wide open ode to her home state with Texas Blue, a new two song cover EP of Townes Van Zandt’s “Loretta” and traditional piece “Texas River Song.” Williamson first heard this pair of poetic masterpieces as a teenager when she first moved to Austin, Texas, and the songs have haunted her since. For Williamson, Loretta was the free spirit she couldn’t be, and her beloved Texas rivers ran deep with heartbreaking memories. With each cover, Williamson reckons with a state, and state of mind, that feels so close but so far away, and breaks a spell that these songs, and Texas’s big, starry skies, have held over her for so long.
